Peng Femme Jam: a live-music jam session, for peng people, highlighting & nurturing femme talent!
The jam culture in London is buzzing. However, jams, much like the wider music-industry, are extremely male dominated and sometimes intimidating for women and non-binary musicians hoping to join in.
Peng Femme Jam (PFJ) was born as a reaction to the male-dominated music/jam scene in London, and designed as a gender-diverse live, improvised event. We aim to create an inclusive and nurturing space for women, queer, and trans global majority musicians to play together and build their musicianship, nurture their creativity and reach their potential as self-sufficient artists/musicians.
We focus on developing people at a grassroots level, where they are empowered to experiment, collaborate and reach their potential. Our events pay marginalised musicians a fair wage, give them the experience of playing their original music with a live band (sometimes for the first time!), and provide them with the opportunity to headline a gig early in their career.
Our jams are open to all, but only people who identify as women or non-binary are paid and booked to play as part of our house band or to host an event. The host of the session decides if they want to play originals, covers, or do a free jam with the house band for their opening set, after which they open up the stage and invite anyone in the crowd to join the stage. This open jam section of the night is always magical, with musicians playing/singing together, interacting with the audience, meeting future bandmates on stage, and more!
