Our Commitment to Sustainability at King’s Cross Summer Sounds

At King’s Cross, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do, and we are proud to host an event that reflects our commitment to environmental responsibility. From energy efficiency to green infrastructure, here's how we ensure that King’s Cross Summer Sounds is part of a sustainable future.

  • King’s Cross is a carbon-neutral neighbourhood, achieved by using 100% renewable energy, improving energy efficiency in buildings, and offsetting carbon emissions. By switching to green gas and electricity, we avoid releasing 19,729 tonnes of CO₂ into the atmosphere every year. Our neighbourhood is powered entirely by renewable sources, including energy generated from renewable gas, meaning that our impact on the environment is neutral – the CO₂ we put into the atmosphere is matched by the CO₂ we remove.

While we focus on sustainability and energy efficiency, there are unavoidable historic carbon emissions from the construction and previous use of our buildings. These emissions are offset through verified carbon credit projects as a last resort, ensuring our impact remains balanced.

  • At the core of our sustainable approach is the on-site Energy Centre with its Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Plant. This advanced district energy network, powered solely by renewable energy, delivers heating and hot water to all buildings across the site through a network of pipes. By eliminating the need for conventional boilers, we significantly reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions.

This low-carbon heat and power system, combined with the energy-efficient design of the buildings, helps make King’s Cross one of the most sustainable developments in the UK.

  • King’s Cross is committed to creating a circular economy, and our Super Nature initiative explores how design, materials, and production methods can have a positive impact on both people and the planet. Through art installations and cultural programming, we facilitate conversations and collaborations that inspire sustainable change.

As part of this journey, we aim to become a circular neighbourhood by 2030, where resources are reused, waste is minimized, and every aspect of our community is designed with the environment in mind.

  • Over 40% of the 67-acre King’s Cross development is dedicated to open space, providing a rich green environment for the community. This includes parks, gardens, leafy squares, and a direct link to Regent’s Canal. These green spaces not only create a pleasant environment for visitors and residents but also offer critical environmental benefits.

Our green infrastructure helps combat urban heat, reduces flood risks, and improves air quality. With over 400 new trees planted, the green spaces at King’s Cross are vital to enhancing biodiversity, providing shade, and supporting wildlife.

By attending King’s Cross Summer Sounds, you’re contributing to a more sustainable future. The event is powered by green energy, and we take steps to minimise waste, encourage recycling, and promote eco-friendly travel options for our visitors. We encourage attendees to walk, cycle, or use public transport to get to the event, helping to reduce our overall carbon footprint.
